Christmas is usually a casual family affair. We have a public holiday for Christmas day and for boxing day (the day after). If these days fall on the weekend we get the public holidays the first day or days of the working week afterwards. Shops close at 5-30 on Christmas eve and some people go to midnight mass on Christmas eve. We open our presents on Christmas morning and then basically spend the day sitting around eating and drinking, visiting friends and relatives to exchange gifts etc. It is all very informal and casual. Lunch is usually lots of seafood and salad with wine or beer. We have some traditional foods like plum pudding etc, but it is usually too hot to eat a big meal during the day so we save them for dinner. After lunch everyone usually sleeps or goes swimming. Some families go to the beach for a barbeque for lunch or eat outdoors by the swimming pool, since Christmas for us is in the middle of summer. Boxing day is a repeat of Christmas day minus the presents. We usually all watch the cricket test match and Sydney to Hobart boat race which always both start on this day.
