Korean Christmas
Vangie

I was an American living in S. Korea for two years. The two Christmases I spent there, I spent with other Americans (Mi Guk In Dul) and foreigners (Wae Guk In Dul). We celebrated like we would back home. I did notice how Koreans spent the holiday. Every Korean church would have some kind of Christmas music program on Christmas day. I remember sneaking into a service in progress just to hear some of Handel’s Messiah. Koreans love to decorate for Christmas. Every coffee shop was decorated for the season. One decoration that was popular was a Christmas tree covered with cotton batton. Also, Christmas decorations stayed up past the holiday season (I saw some decorations still up in March). Christmas day was spent shopping. Forget the day after. Everyone goes shopping. It was nice to see Korean families spending the day together going from shop to shop just “eye shopping.”
