Memories of Christmas in South Dakota
When I was a little girl, we would get together with aunts, uncles and cousins at my grandparents place. I can remember when we had to hitch the horses to a sleigh and travel two and half miles to my grandparents place. It was cold out but we huddled down so it didn’t seem cold, but I am sure for the driver it was. We opened our gifts after dinner. Fresh-made buns, mashed potatoes, gravy, meat and pies along with many other foods. We didn’t have a lot of toys, but there were always gifts for us.
One year I wasn’t going to share my doll house with my cousins, and my father set me straight and told me I had to share. I remember that very well. The house always seemed so warm and busy with all the visiting and playing. With lots of snow and happy people around, it was fun. Memories are great.
