Our Christmas tradition – 12 courses
I am a Canadian from Italian heritage. My parents come from Cosenza, Calabria. My mother has always had the tradition of serving 12 courses for Christmas eve, and all being meatless. She always includes the salt cod (baccala) in tomato sauce, the spaghetti with anchovies, and always broccoli. She rounds out the rest of the meal with fried whitefish, shrimp, vegetables. No Christmas goes by without having torrone, a nougat with hazelnuts or almonds and we play a game that my parents played when they were children in Italy, played with hazelnuts in the shell.
