Santa Claus is coming to town!!
What about Christmas???
Christmas is growing bigger the last few years. However, there are still two spiritual happenings in Holland.
First of all “Sinterklaas.” He is a holy man who gives presents to little children on the 5th of December.
Second of all there is Christmas on the 24th and 25th of December. People give each other presents, there is a Christmas tree, and the whole day long there are different meals and drinks.
The 24th (Christmas Eve) everybody goes to church and people give each other presents.
The 25th is a family day with meals, drinks, Christmas music and romantic television (love or christmas orientated).
The 26th is for friends and other family members. The youngsters go to the cafe and disco’s/nightclubs. The grown people go to a restaurant or they have a Christmas meeting with friends at home.
New Year’s parties — on 31 December there is always a big party in Holland. Fireworks, television, special food and a lot of alcohol. Until 12pm everybody stays with friends and family. At 12pm they go into the streets to wish everybody a happy new year and to watch the fireworks. And after 12pm people go to organised parties and festivals until 07.00 am.
