Seven Fish & Christmas Eve?

Although I do not live in Italy, my grandfather arrived at age thirteen on a ship into Ellis Island. Christmas Eve is a very special time for our family. We never eat meat on Christmas Eve, always fish. I have heard my family speak of eating seven different types of fish on Christmas Eve, but when I ask why and what types are fish, no one has the answer. I was wondering if anyone would like to share why Italians chose not to eat meat on Christmas eve and what types of fish are chosen, and why the number seven? I would like to continue this tradition with my family and have searched the internet high and low for an answer. Any help would be much appreciated. “Buon Natale” Michelle
