Product Description

U-Haul and Me recounts the adventure of hundreds of do-it-yourself moves that took its now 98-year-old author back-and-forth across the country in the driver?s seat of a U-Haul truck. Roxi Wright provides a self-move primer for anyone who wants to transform their own life and relocate to a new home, a new job, and new friends. The tales of her travels illustrate that the reinvention of self is possible at any age, despite a lack of funds or assistance from friends. Roxi independently moves her neighborhood horizons hundreds of times, often not knowing one person in the new towns of her choice. Her final self-move in a U-Haul truck was made at the age of 95. Beginning with a humble childhood in a rural Indiana town as one of six children, Roxi?s experiences as a beautiful and self-educated woman, make her prey to con artists and n?er do well men. But her indomitable optimism allows her to forge ahead. Is she always running away? The reader must draw that conclusion, based on Roxi?s own words and accounts of the many people who befriended her, and the obstacles that lay in her path. From finding jobs to self-renovating her homes, Roxi shares the details of her everyday life in an honest and compelling voice. She delves into subjects that were controversial back in the 1930s: divorce, rape, smoking, and prejudice. Snippets of memories, called Bits? n Pieces, about life?s small details, offer further glimpses into the persona of this remarkable woman. And photographs, some of them carefully packed in the U-Hauls and preserved for more than 50 years, provide yet another view into her fascinating history. About the author: Roxi J. Wright was born in 1914 in the small town of New Castle, Indiana. She began this book, her first endeavor as an author, at the age of 95, writing at a small desk in her bedroom on an electric typewriter. Her life was challenging, and she has survived two of her three children and three husbands. Necessity caused Roxi to move her residences in her young adult years. Later, frequent moves became her way of life. She truly became a modern nomad, using U-Haul trailers and trucks and driving herself from point to point. She literally covered thousands of miles and settled into hundreds of new homes. At the time of publication, she lives in an assisted living home in Mesa, Arizona, with her only surviving daughter nearby.. Price: $26.96
