Beloved Tender Hearts
Beloved Tender Hearts began as a conversation among friends who sat with a 38-year-old grieving widow, Jennifer Hindo, worried about how she would care for her three small children -- ages 2, 6 and 7-- after the sudden death of her husband, Omar. At just 39, Omar died of complications from an enlarged heart, clogged arteries and Barrett's Syndrome (a pre-cancerous disease that leads to esophageal adenocarcinoma). At the time of his death, Omar's heart was so enlarged it was nearly double the normal size. Jennifer found herself, like many spouses and parents across the country, without a life insurance policy, as well as the loss of potential income so necessary to survive in today's economy and trying to plan for her family’s future needs. One in five people in America lose a parent by age 17. More than 30 percent of spouses receive NO life insurance, and nearly 67 percent experience a major and devastating financial impact on their lives. My friend Jennifer is potentially one of those people. She's a middle school teacher at a time when state employees work harder, with fewer resources, decreased benefits and wage cuts. Mounting medical costs and rocketing prescription prices for her family were already an increasing concern for Jennifer. Beloved Tender Hearts is in its humble beginnings. The organization will hold an annual benefit to offer financial and emotional support and provide a foundation of kinship, encouragement and assistance to navigate through an extremely difficult time for surviving spouses with small children. Omar's sudden death was truly heartbreaking, but instead of letting it break us, we will "pay it forward" to do some good and honor his memory. This year, we'll take care of one of our own, Jennifer, and her three children.Next year, and in years to come, Beloved Tender Hearts will be firmly established in the community as a nonprofit organization. We hope that families suffering a loss such as the Hindos will find comfort in the generosity of close friends, acquaintances and strangers -- and with the help of Beloved Tender Hearts. The first benefit event for the Hindo family will be held Aug 21, 2012 at the Grand Tavern, located at: 35450 Grand River Ave.Farmington, MI 48335The second event of the year will be held Aug 29, 2012 at Cafe Cortina, located at:30715 West 10 Mile RoadFarmington Hills, MI 48336For information on how to donate (checks payable to Jennifer Hindo), please find Beloved Tender Hearts on Facebook.com, "like" us and check back for updates.
