Just days after turning three years old Ashlyn Lang was diagnosed with a life threatening disease known as Tyrosenemia Type I. Having been undiagnosed her entire life, the disease (which essentially turns all proteins ingested into poison) has destroyed Ashlyn's liver as well as her kidneys and spleene. Ashlyn was in dire need of a liver transplant as her chances of developing liver cancer were too high, which would most likely go undetected due to her current health condition and symptoms. Her only saving grace was a liver transplant. Our prayers were answered on June 11th as her sister was a perfect donor match. Ashlyn and Alli's surgerys went very well and both girls are recovering nicely. Our journey started in January this year having to spend a month in Vancouver Childrens Hospital. The endless testing and blood work that our little girl endured was very sad. Then the next two months at home getting her stronger on endless medications and hospital visits, getting her ready for her transplant. The work up was in April in Edmonton at Stollery Childrens Hospital as they don't do pediatric transplants in BC. Ashlyn was listed at the end of April. We were very fortunate to have such a great family and so many wonderful friends who were willing to donate to save Ashlyn's life. Her surgery took place on June 11th. The surgery was a huge success and Ashlyn is recovering nicely. The most crutial time for rejection is the first three months and then getting through the first year. We have almost made the three month mark!! We spent four weeks in hospital and the next six weeks at the Ronald Macdonald House in Edmonton. We just arrived home to Kelowna on August 24th. We will take one day at a time and be forever grateful to Ashly's big sister Alli for the beautiful gift she gave us...a new life!!We have started a fundraiser as so many people have asked what they can do to help and would like to make some sort of a donation. We would like to thank everybody who has helped us out so far. We could not have gone through this alone. Weather you have provided financial assistance, friendship or just a hug...thank you so much for your support!! You will never know how much it means to us.
