Peanut Allergen Alert Dog for my Daughter
It is not easy to and ask for help from others, but, since this is for the welfare of my daughter, I am hoping we can have a little help and also raise awareness for what a dog can do for people with life threatening allergies. Sitting here writing this, I am thinking of what this past year has been like for her and I. It is a year since she almost lost her life to peanut exposure on a school trip, and the time between then and now, she has had too many exposures at the new school she went to. It is possibly the toughest thing in the world to watch your child fight for their life, especially when it is something easily preventable by simple thoughts and remembrance. I chose to take a stand, on behalf of my daughter, and begin to seek out a dog who could be trained for this sort of service work throughout North America. I knew this would be the more econimical approach, but, I also wanted to be able to save another life. After months of searching for both trainer and dog, we found Declan and his trainer at the same time, in the Baltimore area. I chose to take a chance and take him out of BARCS Animal Shelter, and it has proved to be a very wise decision-despite the emotions and excitement involved. The amount I am asking for covers the cost of training (which was discounted to half by his trainer), his trip home with his amazing trainer and whatever supplies and necessities he will need (harness, vest, tags, vet visit prior to coming home, etc) as well as training when he gets home via St. John's Ambulance, so he and my daughter can bond. His trainer will be spending up to 5 days with us, so she can be sure that we have everything we need for this to be successful. (We are in Nova Scotia, and they are in Maryland)My daughter, Declan and I all thank you for helping out in any way you can. I do understand that times are tough for everyone. Many blessings to each of you.xoYou can follow our journey via Facebook by typing in DeclansDiary. Please share our journey with your friends and family who may need use of a dog like Declan. We hope we will be able to help other families in their own search. Many training worthy dogs CAN be found in shelters and rescue- we found one!
