Some friends have come forward wanting to donate to Rita's pyometra surgery, so I set up this account to make it easier to do! We really are SO grateful for everyone that has wanted to help her out! Pyometra is only cured by surgery for removing the uterus, and if not done, it is 100% fatal."Rita" our newest addition that had wandered upon Rossitza's front door seemed healthy enough after her initial vet check. Rossi and Paulo got her checked, wormed, de-ear mited, and vaccinated before turning her over to me for a new home. (The vet did not catch this issue, because at the time it was a low grade infection with no fever.) 3 days after she came to our house, she started leaking white pus from her vulva. Poor thing! Cleaning herself until almost raw, she began having hours of 'contractions' from her body trying to push the pus from her infected uterus. She stopped eating and drinking water, and lost almost a pound. So weak from the contractions, she stopped trying and would lay there letting the infection just drain from her. The pus began to turn grey. This is all occurred in less than 24hours. This is where we are currently at: We got her into the vet today (sunday), and was told she needed emergency surgery and that the surgery would cost a minimum of $800. I'm a grad student - we can't afford that! Especially on such short notice! So to be a little creative the vet put her on high dose of anti-biotics and subcutateous fluids so she can hopefully lower the infection enough to get her through until I can get the money together to get her surgery. We have 2 weeks max to do this! That is the length of the anitbiotic cycle. We have to cross our fingers she makes it through those 2 weeks. So after stuffing her with $100 of antibiotics, and $80 of subcutaneous fluid, she is home fighting the infection until we can afford to get her the $800-$1200 surgery it will cost to remove her uterus and get her spayed. Because of this infection, she is not eligible for a normal spay operation that would only cost about $60 at a spay and neuter clinic This is the ONLY treatment for this infection. It is either surgery and an immediate return to normal life - which she deserves, or let her own uterus kill her from the inside out. There is no option to have her put to sleep. She is perfectly healthy besides this issue, and will be a normal healthy cat after the surgery. Unfortunately Rita is a cause of someone not spay/neutering her parents, and if she belonged to someone before Rossi found her, they were also irresponsible in not getting her spayed.
