Josh's Legacy Benefiting Cystic Fibrosis

Our son, Josh Wilson, suffered with cystic fibrosis (CF). Josh lost his battle with CF on January 3, 2010. It’s our family’s mission to bring awareness of this disease to you. Let me start by telling you a little about (CF). CF is caused by a defective gene which causes the body to produce abnormally thick and sticky fluid, called mucus. This mucus builds up in the breathing passages of the lungs and in the pancreas, the organ that helps to break down and absorb food. Millions of Americans carry the defective CF gene, but do not have any symptoms. That’s because the person with CF must inherit two defective CF genes- one from each parent. An estimated 1 in 31 Americans have the CF gene. This disease is the most common, deadly, inherited disorder affecting millions of Americans. Today, the median life expectancy is approximately 37 years, a dramatic increase over the last three decades. Death is usually caused by lung complications. There is no way to prevent cystic fibrosis. Screening those with a family history of the disease may detect the cystic fibrosis gene in 60 - 90% of carriers, depending on the test used. Two drugs in particular are showing a lot of promise for our patients. If approved by the FDA, these drugs (VX-770 & VX-809) would address the root cause of the disease, not just the symptoms. They would replace hours of daily care and multiple hospital visits each year with just a few pills a day. CF patients would manage their disease in much the same way a diabetic does. This research would not be possible without fundraising events such as "An Evening of Wine and Roses". The future of people with CF depends on the support of volunteers, CF families, generous donors and wise investments in science. With more than 30 potential therapies in the CF Foundation's drug development pipeline, there is much hope that people with CF will enjoy long, healthy lives, while pursuing their goals and dreams to the fullest. We look forward to the day when CF will stand for Cure Found! Josh’s Legacy was founded by Josh’s father and stepmother, Greg and Stephanie Wilson.
