The Gracie Fund
After months of treatment, persistence, and support, Gracie peacefully slipped away in the hands of her rescuers, early August 2012. From the time of her rescue in late May, Gracie lived knowing the entire community loved and supported her.Gracie was rescued from a high kill shelter where she appeared healthy, but within a few days of coming to DAWG developed symptoms that landed her in the emergency clinic. After some improvement and tremendous financial support from the community, the DAWG family brought her home where they pursued treatment for Leptospirosis. After a few days Gracie’s improvement leveled off, and when she began to decline again the incredible DAWG veterinary team pursued further diagnostics. Gracie tested positive for Ehrlichia, a tick borne illness that attacks the bone marrow. Further test results indicated that Gracie was also positive for Distemper, a highly contagious viral infection that few dogs survive. With Leptospirosis, Ehrlichia, and Distemper Gracie had little chance of survival. Still, the DAWG team fought with Gracie until her body gave in.Gracie will be remembered for her incredible will to survive and her affectionate nature. She is survived by millions of homeless dogs who await their forever homes. Please consider donating to the “Gracie Fund†at DAWG that will fund compassionate care to animals with potentially terminal illnesses. Her fund has already saved a little guy named Walnut that was rescued the same day Gracie left us.
