Help me finish my Ph.D. once and for all!
After a few years of juggling work and writing, a deadline has arrived. I have to be enrolled in the quarter in which I defend and file my doctoral dissertation. This means paying $5K in regular tuition and fees and $5K in non-resident tuition and fees: I am a UCLA graduate student who moved back to Dallas in 2008. The Ethnomusicology Department has agreed to cover the non-resident portion, but only if I defend and file Spring Quarter 2013 (April to June). I work roughly 32 hours a week as a product demonstration supervisor at Costco, making $14 an hour. I am already hard-pressed for writing time, so working more hours is not really an option: I have to submit a defensible draft to my adviser by March 1st. On the other hand, saving $5K between now and the end of March (when I have to enroll for Spring Quarter) will be a challenge. My parents have allowed me to move back in with them so that I can put what would be rent money into savings; without their generosity, I would not be able to save at all. I wanted to begin last month, but had one car problem after another! I drive a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am, so more hiccups are bound to arise in the near future...I would greatly appreciate any donations you could muster! They would defray the cost of tuition, fees, and a week-long trip to L.A. for the defense in April or May. In return, I will acknowledge you in my dissertation--"From Punta Rock to World Music (and Back): Constructions of Tradition in Garifuna Popular Music"--and provide you a copy if you so desire (although if you have other ideas in mind, let me know!). :-) You will also receive my eternal gratitude for helping me become the first in my family to obtain a Ph.D.!
