A D.A.D. (Diabetic Alert Dog) for Avery
Help us purchase a D.A.D. for Avery. A D.A.D., or Diabetic Alert Dog is a service dog specially trained to assist individuals with diabetes. Avery was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was 4 years old. There are times when Avery's blood sugar can go dangerously low. These incidents could result in a seizure, coma or death. Our biggest worry is that Avery's blood sugar will drop while she is sleeping and not wake up. To prevent this we check her blood sugar around 11 PM and then again at 3 AM every night. This is part of the 24/7 care Avery requires. Diabetic alert service dogs are trained to recognize and alert on the scent of low and/or high blood sugar in diabetics. The service dog would wake Avery at night if a low or high blood sugar was detected. If Avery does not wake then the dog would wake another member of the family. The service dog is also trained to retrieve a blood glucose monitor, juice or sugar tabs. Partnering with a Diabetic Alert Dog would have a significant impact on Avery's life including the potential to save it.A confident, hard-working service dog provides emotional security to people that have fears of the "what if " scenario. A service dog can provide a sense of balance and well being giving Avery the self-confidence needed to get out in the world and live their life to the fullest.Help support us by donating today.
