Help Build Tom Karen's Center!
To start building, Tom needs YOUR help!MISSION: Tom Karen's Center will educate and empower the 102 Karen ethnic minority children of Baan Huaisak village in Northern Thailand through better English education and traditional Karen cultural activities.THE NEED: Better education outside of school will help the poorer children of Baan Huaisak (Tom's village) keep up in school with the kids from richer communities and prevent them from dropping out of school, which puts them at higher risk of becoming trapped in poverty and falling into drug addiction, alcoholism, prostitution, or being trafficked to the urban centers of Thailand.$2,000 BUILDS THE CENTER!: Two teaching rooms, books, games, stationary, art supplies, blackboard, floor mats, simple electric lighting, and a small kitchen outside. Not bad, eh? Actually, the center will cost $2,500 to build, but Tom has already spent $500 of his savings as a tour guide to buy some of the raw materials.WHERE THE MONEY GOES:Tom Karen currently needs money to start construction on the center. This money will cover raw materials, books, games, stationary, art supplies, and some basic furniture for the center. Over the past 6 months, Tom already saved up $500 of his own money he earned as a tour guide and used it to buy some of the wood, clay, and sand for the center, but he needs your help to raise remaining $2,000.SELF-SUSTAINING SOCIAL BUSINESS: Upon completion, the center will generate some income from visitor teacher donations, income from cooking classes with foreign tourists, and some continued donations from friends. TOM'S PAST PROJECTS:Tom has already contributed significantly to the children in his community. In 2009, his friends helped him raise over $2,500 USD to buy computers for one of the schools and last year his friends from San Francisco helped him buy sport uniforms for the children. Now, parents in the community have asked Tom to help their children learn English, so he is building Tom Karen's Center to do this!PLEASE DONATE!: Tom is ready to start building as soon as he gets the funds to do so, and will build as much as he can with the funds he has. Please give what you can, every bit helps!Sawasdee Khrup,Friends of Tom, from USA NOTE: The number 9 in Thailand signifies "Go!" or "Keep Going" and is a sign of encouragement. This is why all the donations end in "9."NOTE NOTE: "Sakkawan Sommuang" is Tom Karen's legal Thai name. He is the one managing the funds.
