The Best Canine Friend Ever ~ Chester

The Best Canine Friend Ever ~ Chester

Three years ago my family and I stopped by our local Humane Society in hopes of finding a dog to call our own. We spent hours looking at all the dogs and spending time with different ones hoping to find just the right dog for our family. After sitting with the second dog we thought this isn't going to happen today. The kind worker from the Humane Society said you're looking for a big dog, right? We responded quickly with a yes. She said I think Chester would be perfect for you, I'll be right back. My husband and I quickly thought what dog is she talking about? The only other dog I could think of was hiding in the back corner of the kennel and wouldn't come anywhere near me as I walked by. That would not be a good fit our family, no way. After bringing Chester in our family immediately fell in love. What a gentle and shy dog. The Humane Society found Chester on the street with no collar and he had apparently been living out there for quite some time. Chester wasn't even his name, they had to name the poor guy, no one knows exactly what kind of dog he is but we do know by his coloring he is an Austrailian Cattle Dog mix. After spending a few minutes with Chester my one year old grabbed ahold of his tail. My husband and I quickly responded fearing the dog might snap at him. Not this guy, Chester just ignored it and continued on walking around with one of our other boys. We knew right then and there this was the dog for us. After getting Chester home the next few weeks/months were not easy. He was scared to death of men and would run if you would try to toss a ball or even got the broom out to sweep. We knew that some horrible man had abused our sweet dog and we just loved on him even more. Chester was with us for about a week when we went out Christmast shopping with our youth group. Our babysitter accidently let him out the wrong door and he ran away. We were devestated. We spent 4 hours in the bitter cold snow searching for our sweet new dog. With it getting dark and no dog in site we called it a night and went in. After spending a few hours crying and wondering what in the world could we do I went to our side door to check one more time. I started screaming and crying...our sweet Chester came home and was curled up in a ball by the door waiting for us to let him in. We have had Chester for almost 3 years now. Although we do not know his true age, the vet believes he is currently about 5 years old. This past summer Chester started acting a little different and over a course of time has lost weight. I didn't realize how much weight until I got to the vet a few weeks ago, he came in at 60lbs. Oh my goodness my heart sank. The vet did not know what was going on but gave us some medicine to try to fix the problem. Sadly it did not work. Today, September 24, 2012 I took him back in. After x-rays and blood work they are still not sure what is wrong with our sweet dog. They gave us some deworming medicine to see if this will help, perhaps they were unable to see a worm in the previous testing. If this does not work they will have to do exploratory surgery. Which could cost anywhere from $600 to $1200. We have already spend $550 in the last few weeks and are lost as of what to do. I am a stay at home mom who homeschools our children. My husband is the sole income provider for our family and has been on lay-off for months now. We have no way to pay for Chester's surgery or to even cover the costs of what we have already had done at the vet. I am asking first that you would pray for us and our Chester. Second if you have a few dollars to spare, would you consider helping us with our vet bills? I know it may sound silly to ask for help for a dog. But this dog is really a family member to us, and we want to do everything we can to help him out. Thank you for listening and may God bless you!
