Mimi's Ovarian Cancer Fundraiser
Born in Laos, Mimi spent her early life in Laotian detention camps with her adoptive family (aunt and uncle). Together, they escaped to Thai and then to Philippine refugee camps. Once granted placement, Mimi and her adoptive parents migrating to upstate New York. As a young adult, she helped her adoptive parents raise their children and helped to interpret English for the Laotian community. After college, Mimi pursued a career in nursing and started working as a Registered Nurse at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Her biological family remained in Laos, and Mimi worked to support herself while also financially helping her family in Laos and her adoptive family in upstate New York.In 2009, Mimi moved to Providence, where she has continued her career at Rhode Island Hospital. Most recently, she is an RN in the Vascular Interventional Radiology Department. Mimi has always cared for her own patients as though they are family. She is compassionate and insightful, easing her patients through difficult experiences with a bright smile and a warm hand. As a Chair Person of The Asian Employee Resource Group at Lifespan, she continues her passion to educate the Asian Community about healthcare. Mimi is also a member of the Board of Advisory at the Rhode Island Department of Health.Admired, loved and respected by friends and colleagues, it was with utter shock and sadness that we learned of MimiÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s diagnosis at the young age of 38. Mimi collapsed at her home and was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital where she was found to have two large ovarian masses. She was transferred to Women and Infants Hospital for further evaluation by the Oncology department. Shortly thereafter, Mimi underwent multiple operations for clinical staging of her disease. In late June, Mimi cut her waist-length jet-black hair in preparation for chemotherapy. She has started her treatments and as always, has tried to maintain a positive outlook.Please join us for a fundraiser to support Mimi and raise awareness for ovarian cancer.Monetary donations in any amount are welcomed.
