Angels for Andy - Wheelchair Van

Angels for Andy - Wheelchair Van

Andy was born May 26, 2004 at Martin Army Community Hospital, Fort Benning Georgia healthy or so we thought. As the months started to go by his mother, Eun Kyoung (EK) and I started to notice that he wasn’t progressing the same as the other infants. We were told he might be starting a little late and not to worry. When he was about 9 months old I deployed for my second tour to Iraq and my wife was home alone to care for Andy. After a few months overseas I received a Red Cross Message that there was an emergency situation with my son and my unit made arrangements for me to go home for emergency leave. The first specialist that we saw gave a worst case scenario, which of course devastated my wife and me. So we sought after a second opinion by another neurologist at Emory Children’s Center in Atlanta. She was way more optimistic, not all doom and gloom. I was allowed to stay state side for just short of a month so back to Iraq I went. While I was away they started a therapy program and made many visits to Emory where they discovered that he was having multiple infantile spasm seizures daily. I came home summer 2006. Seeing my little Andy go through pt, ot and test after test and still smiling and laughing even if he wasn’t able to speak he showed he was happy to see us, new people and enjoy all the activity. In 2007 I had to deploy for a 3rd time this time being more difficult for EK and Andy because he was getting bigger but she still managed the best that she could. In late 2008 after returning home I left the army and moved my family to Pennsylvania. Andrew is 8 years old and loves to get out but it is more and more difficult as he gets bigger. Andrew has multiple disabilities mobility, communication, eating, learning, and uncontrolled seizures but he makes me smile and laugh and he deserves to see and do everything he can. Being able to purchase an accessible vehicle will improve Andrew’s quality of life and make everyday activities more of a possibility for our family.
