My daughter, Michelle Friedman, a mother of three school age children, has been in the fight for her life with metastatic breast cancer and she has been facing overwhelming medical bills. Recently, her husband, Ken, was laid off and now they will lose their health insurance and family income. The stress of their financial problems affects her ability to fight her illness and she needs as much economic help as she can get. Can you help? She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 when she was 41. After a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction, chemotherapy, and radiation we thought she had beaten the disease. To our surprise and dismay, in June 2011 Michelle was diagnosed with a recurrence. This was shortly after starting a first grade teaching position, and treatments required her to abandon her job. The cancer had spread throughout her liver and bones. She did respond exceptionally well to treatment and today, after 14 months of chemo, we pray that she is on the way to remission. However, without health insurance it is impossible to pay for her treatments. With Michelle’s husband out of work and her career at a standstill, we need to raise money to pay for the COBRA benefits that will enable her to continue therapy and stay alive. Her children need their mom: Allison, her beautiful and talented girl who is preparing to apply for college; Jason, a sweet and sensitive 10th grader; and Jonah, a 9-year-old poetic baseball player who insists he couldn’t last a day without her.
